So... tell me about YOU!

Post by Lily »

Since we're getting new members every day and the forum is growing, I thought it would be good to have a bit of an introductory thread and give each other the opportunity to learn a bit more about each other :)

Some of you probably already know a bit about me, but I'll give you a bit of my background to start the ball rolling.

I'm a mum, I'm on the 'wrong' side of 30 but the 'right' side of 40 (though I shouldn't really say that as I've really enjoyed my 30's), I am married and have two children in primary school, a girl and a boy. Obviously, I live in Lysterfield :D I work part time as a sales rep and sales trainer for a national company in a relocations business. Sometimes I travel interstate to do training so I get to see a bit of this wonderful country of ours and my work picks up the tab (bonus!).

I have an uncanny knack of taking weather, rain, severe storms and even flooding with me whenever I travel. Friends and workmates think they're being funny and will call me to check on my planned location for a given date before finalising their plans to go away, get married, etc. We have progressively moved through camping with a tent, to a tent trailer, to a camper trailer and now to a caravan (and cabin at Eildon) for this reason - I'm sick of getting wet under canvas, and I'm not just talking a bit of rain, I'm talking flooded!

I have always, always loved weather, even as a kid, but I have no formal knowledge and only a basic understanding (though I'd love to expand on this more). Our home was flooded in the Dec 03 storms and after this I searched on the internet to find information and learn about what happened that night and why. This was when I started to really become more interested in weather, and, well, here I am! It just fascinates me but I can't really explain why (and my husband & friends think I'm a bit weird - they Just.Don't.Get.It   ).

So, what about you?
:D

Well hi there Lily! :D

My name would be Rikki Pool.
I'm 22 years old. I have 4 sisters and a dog. I'm engaged to Patricia Murphy, the most amazing woman in the world. We are getting Married tihs september. We are currently in the process of building a house, at least we will be once the building permits get approved.

I am a factory manager for a buisness called Premium SHowers and wardrobes. Job description incudes unloading and sorting through 6ton worth of product every day.

My hobbies are Photography and Tenpin Bowling.

I have been interested in weather since I was around 15. And since then I have learnt an immense amount of knowledge from forums like these.

That should do for now. :)
I live in a world where I dont see to believe, but I believe to see...

Well I would make up another name but you know....

I am Karl. I am 26 in May and feeling every bit of it. ;) I am about 6ft 5 and come a very large dutch family who did not beleive in contraception thanks to the catholic church haha!! I am number 4 in a long list of 6 children. No dog here presently.

I work for Russell Athletic in Melbourne in the Sherrin Football Division. It is a very busy job about 9 months of the year. I also teach singing of a weeknight. I also sing and vocally direct the local church music as well which I love. Over the years I have recorded a few CDs and done Background Vocals and Live Recordings in the Christian music industry which has been fun.

I also work with the youth in the area doing a lot of community outreach events and getting to meet the kids where they are at.

Add to that - I am the owner of this little webpage which will be expanding hopefully over the coming 12 months.

Anything else??

Oh and I stormchase when I can.....

I'm half of the Trentham Stormchasers and Australian Sky & Weather with Clyve Herbert. Jane ONeill if you haven't fallen over me or seen a blue Forester with "AUSSKY" numberplates (although I'm travelling incognito atm as the car is for sale but the plates aren't).

Live in Trentham on nearly 3 acres just outside town - I'm the Gunyah Bend part of Trentham Weather online http://trentham.bsch.au.com/GunyahBe/Cu ... ge_Pro.htm and Clyve Herbert is the other weather station 1.2km away in town proper http://trentham.bsch.au.com/FrogIsla/Cu ... ge_Pro.htm whose weather station is now charged with continuing a very long tradition of weather records dating back more than 40 years and with a monthly weather summary appearing in the monthly town newsletter, courtesy of Clyve.

I have a German Shorthaired Pointer (Tango - 4.5 years old and finally starting to grow up) who I've shown occasionally with great success. I've been stormchasing since I could walk, my first motorised stormchase was the afternoon I got my drivers licence, the first photos that I ever took as a teenager in Canberra were Cb's! At the age of 9 you could find me during school holidays sitting in the corridor of the ANU in Canberra where mum worked with Manning Clarke (no less!) reading meteorology and geomorphology textbooks...so I'm a pretty reasonable nerd - read textbooks most of the time and only novels when I'm on a very long plane flight.

I'm National Administration Manager for a toner cartridge company in Melbourne and drive 200km a day to and from work.....so far in my life (I should mention that I'm over 50) I've had jobs ranging from stripping cars and cataloguing parts in a wreckers (1st job), taxi driver, working in newsagency, cleaning, teacher, running a professional photographic business in Queanbeyan, toner cartridge business in Abbotsford, sell Davis weather stations and Kestrel hand held weather monitors and we're just about to start selling antique barometers and clocks (as some of you may have noticed a few weeks back).

Clyve & I host the Gunyah Bend Music Bash in January on the 'nut block' - aka the front paddock - Clyve plays bass in a band and I'm the sound engineer and roadie and photographer...I also photograph Welsh ponies for the Welsh pony stud in Trentham and I'd love to photograph the thoroughbreds at Wadham Park just down the road.....currently I'm listening to cicadas and cattle.....tough living in the country...can I shut up now? :cloudy: :snowflake: :lighting:

Oh, and I'll stormchase at the drop of a lightning bolt...........have been known to drive home the long way round because there are storms......like 400kms....

Hello everyone :D

As you may all already know, I am Jake! I live in southwest Victoria, near Simpson South. I am 16 years of age and have loved the weather ever since I can remember. My parents say that when I was real little and there was a thunderstorm, I used to walk outside and watch it on the front deck!!

My main subjects that I am currently studying are Mathematical Methods, Physics and Chemistry, but also others such as English, R.E, History and Psychology. I am hopeing to do further studies at Melbourne University and then go on to complete the training course at the Bureau of Meteorology to become a meteorologist. If that fails, I would like to make myself into the media industry presenting weather (but knowing what I am saying unlike some weather presenters  )

I have presented the weather LIVE on NATIONAL television for the Sunrise morning show a few years back, and all my friends just look to me when they want to know the weather. ;)

That's all I can think of at the moment! :)

Great thread! nice to put some details to the screen names.
I'm Chris and i'm a 36 (feel more like 26 most of the time) year old married to an amazing girl called Helen. We're not local by any means, moving out here from the motherland in Sept 2005. I'm a technical specialist with a company called AB Sciex. Basically they make instruments for life science called Mass Spectrometers and I install them and fix them when they break. I'm very fortunate in that I get to do something most days that I really really enjoy, get paid for it, and generally have pretty good time with it. Plus there's a lot of travel too, just back from a week in Canada (head office), and planning a trip to Shanghai a few months after the bubs arrives.

I kinda fell into this business after dropping out of of uni in my final year of studying to be a Podiatrist. Always been good at fixing things and have a fascination of how things work. One of my earliest memories is having my own screwdriver and using it to see how a radio worked.

I've work for the same comapny for over 10 years, and they are the ones who persuaded me and my soon-to-be wife to come to Australia. Only six weeks after we got married, we were here with nothing but a few suitcases. Didn't know a soul out here!

The rest is history really - settled in the eastern suburbs, went to a random church soon after arriving and met the wonderful karl! Who could ignore him??? :woooo: Obviously his passion for weather really rubbed off...

I've always been awed by the weather, especially extremes. As a child we used to get severe winters in the UK, with 'big freezes' lasting many weeks. I'm an avid skier too, love the cold weather - there's nothing quite like standing on top of a mountain in the swiss alps with a glass of hot Gluwein. Alas the skiing is not so good over here. We used to have the privilege of regular overseas trips in the summer hols to places like Florida and the carribean islands. Been through many severe storms, but I particularly remember being stuck in Barbados when I was about 15 because the airport was closed. Funnily enough it was a tropical storm called Chris!

My interest in weather has only really been indulged seriously in the last 6 months, much to my wife's disdain :pullinghair: Seriously though, she's pretty cool about it all, even coming on chases with me. Methinks she might have a taste for it 8-)

I'm also very excited about becoming a dad very soon - Helen is 35 weeks gone, and just about over it! It's all a little scary and surreal right now.

In my spare time I'm usually found tinkering in my 'bat cave' under the house, fixing things in the house, or wondering aimlessly around Bunnings in Croydon.

I can't stand the local radio stations here, they only ever seem to play Pink or Kings of bloody Leon. Because of that, I have an internet radio and stick to the decent stuff on English stations :guitar:

Oh! and I love single malt whiskey too. Just finished a nice drop from Laphroaig, so it must be time for bed...

Enjoy the weekend everyone, happy chasing tomorrow

This is great! It's so nice to "meet" all of you, people I've talked with for a few years but don't know much about!

Jane, can I confess, I have been a long time lurker (stalker?!) of you and Clyve. Even before finding WZ and other sites, I found you two - love your work!

Keep 'em coming

Great idea Lily :) and wonderful to learn more about y'all

I'm Robyn married to Ken with a 28yr old son Luke who was a miracle baby born at 25 weeks. He's amazing and has done it hard to get where he is today. His brother Tad, born 8 months later, only survived for 3 hours. Have been living up here in the Dandenongs for 25 years and absolutely love it, except for last summer.

I'm an artist by trade. Had a leadlight shop in Elwood with a partner in the 80s. My freestanding leadlight birds were chosen for the Australian gift shop in Seville Spain Expo 1992. Roundabout that time set up a business designing and manufacturing decoupage wrapping and cards and within three months had reps all over Australia. In 1997 had a series of heart attacks which saw me close down the business but nothing keeps me down for long and by 1999 I was running Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt's offical web sites. I was also with the Fanatics and used to go to the Davis Cup meets all over the world and in Australia. I also paint mandalas so taught that for a while between 2006 and 2008. Taught beading occasionally in the 1990s and also produced beadwork designs as an add on to the paper and card business. I was bitten by the competition bug in 2005 and the following year won $80,000 worth of goods including a 3 week trip to Canada and Alaska and the Willy Wonka extra golden ticket trip to the UK. I still enter occasionally and was lucky enough to win a second trip to Canada last year just by entering an orange juice barcode online :) Over the last couple of years my passion for photography has overuled everything else. I have been a mad photographer since the 60s. My first husband was a professional photographer. It has only been in the last three years that I decided to learn much more. I actually bought my first computer in 1996 and it was then I bought Painter and Photoshop for the express purpose of painting from scratch and making digital art so I was lucky I knew quite a bit about those programs which helped me in learning all the processing tips for photography. My husband has actually had a computer since the mid 70s. He said back then that plastics and computers were the future.

From 1999 I also used our huge downstairs rumpus room for a halfway house for the youth here in Ferny Creek. Their parents thought it was great that they weren't wandering the streets. My home was open 24/7 to them and I would often help them with their problems. Also ran meditation evenings for them for a few years. Consequently they are in their mid 20s now and I have made friends for life. They regard me as a second mum and a good friend.

Have always been fascinated by the weather particularly earthquakes and volcanos (in May I'm staying on the island of Tanna which has a strombolian volcano, erupts about every 2 hours). Went to WZ in January last year on the advice of a friend and have been learning as much as I can thanks to you guys. Still have a long way to go tho.

I'm 60 in September, can't believe it! I am going to have a huge party for everyone I know. Ken said to wait until the last minute to book the venue in case I don't make it (I have quite a few health issues but try not to let anything hold me back lol). His friend added that if I didn't make it they could turn it into a wake. Nice guys

My first post on this forum, so why not introduce myself!
My name is Leigh Stevens, but everyone calls me Leroy. I am 32 years old and married with 2 gorgeous kids. I have a cat (Polly) and a mini dashy (Delores) who has a boyfriend visiting at the moment! Hopefully we have some puppies in a few months. I live in Bendigo and have been fascinated by severe weather (More so tornadoes) for, well, forever!
I live a very busy life (Don't we all), and have never really taken the time to study weather and understand more about what elements are required for storms, etc. 2010 is going to be different.
I have loaded myself up with some resources and am going to dedicate this year to learning more about the weather and in particular forecasting severe storms. The idea being, one day to be able to make my own assumptions and go on a chase!
Rik lives near me and I plan to junp in with him for a chase or two; but don't want to embarrass myself with my lack of knowledge!
Anyway, that's enough from me.
If anyone has any recommended reading for me, feel free to shoot it through.
My email is leroy@people.net.au
Cheers

Hi Leroy!! Welcome aboard and we are so happy to have you on here. Rikki is a great friend of mine and I do encourage you to get in that car and get out and around with him.

ASWA - Australia Severe Weather Association - is a group of fab people who talk all the severe weather you want!! They have bi monthly meetings in Melbourne which I understand that is a bit of a drive - however, judging by the Bendigo contingent on here I think we need to petition a meeting up there!! But certainly come along and enjoy hearing and telling your stories of weather you have experienced. AUSSKY and Icestorm who are members on here are the lovely people to contact for further info.

I hope you get involved and test the waters when it comes to posting info and weather reports from your areas. We are all on the same plane, trying to figure out what the hell is going on with the weather, but we have fun doing so.

Glad your part of the this weather family and I hope to see you around on here!!! :)

Well, everyone knows i am AV.

Im 36, have a wife, Vicki, and 3 beautiful daughters, Madison 7, Cassandra 5, and Stephanie 17 months. I work in construction, more specifically building precast concrete panels in a factory in hallam, for all the Apartments you see going up in the city. I start at 5am, sometimes 4am, and work at least 10 hours a day. Not fun in these conditions.

My wife and i also own an online department store, early days but loving every minute of it and something else to concentrate on. Especially for my wife who can earn an income with children at home.

I hate the Australian cricket team with a passion, ditto St Kilda and Essendon, and yes, i follow Collingwood.

I have loved weather since i was 5 years old, most kids are scared of thunder but i loved it and never missed a storm, even as a kid i would get up and watch lightning at night.

I met Karl as a 16 year old 9 years ago on WeatherZone...before realising he lived in the house behind mine in Knoxfield!! Been great mates ever since and have him over for dinner all the time, even to this very day living out at Lilydale. And he says that i amuse him on facebook, and even on the phone, because i say things that people wouldnt say normally.

Also, i moved to the Gold Coast in May 06 for some sort of sea change, ended in disaster of sort when i had a serious car accident in Nov 06, so after 6 months off work limped home halfway through 07...a very costly exercise, despite having an awesome time there.

I reckon thats about it....oh yeah i hate summer, and hate wearing clothes.

Thanks Guys,
I joined ASWA the other day, and am looking forward to attending the next meeting. I coach a aussie rules footy team here, so just hoping it doesn't get in the way too much!
Installed my weather station today (La Crosse WS3600), so looking forward to getting learning a bit there.
Anyway, back to the books!
Cheers

Just in case you don't know, my name is Wes.

I am 32 and am getting married in 6 weeks. I have lived life a bit upside down. I have 2 children, Hayley (5) and Xavier (15mths) from a beautiful woman (Nicole). We also have two labradors, Rolie & Abbey, that pretty much rule our Doncaster East house.

We also have a family holiday house at Taylor Bay (Lake Eildon), where we try and escape to as much as we can.

I am a bit of a journeyman when it comes to work. Previously a payroll manager at a leading wholesale electrical company, I decided to qual myself in Finance/Mortgage Broking in 2007. That was pretty much when the GFC came a knocking. I was given an opportunity to Project Manage the valuation of Government assets for Financial Reporting, which I am still doing (and enjoying). It doesn't stop there, I am very keen in Business Development and have strong ties with a number of companies/suppliers to promote them and also offer great products at a more realistic price for my network of buyers. The biggest being Campbells Wines, where twice a year we buy in excess of 150 dozen bottles of wine at prices that Dan Murphys can't compete with. It is very enjoyable and a great relationship builder.

Anyway, my love of weather has been with me since about 5, when I was given a book called Wilkies Weather. When the rest of the family are terrified during thunderstorms, I would race out to check the structure of the cloud and then count the seconds between lightning and thunder. Back then, there was no internet or radar to check, just had to keep an eye out. I have always loved the weather, but it wasn't until I stumbled onto WZ that I could actually post about it. And from there, you could say the rest is history. Once the kids are a bit older, I look forward to joining a few of you on a chase. I have starting arming myself with technology and equipment that I can use during storm chasing. The next item on the list is a camera.

When Karl and Robyn asked me to be a moderator and then administrator for this forum, I was truly honoured. It is a priviledged position to be in. To have such a great membership makes my life a lot easier, as we all share the same passion. Sure we have different opinions, that's life. However, at the end of the day we are all discussing & questioning about the one thing we love, the weather.

Great thread..... and thanks to Lily for pointing me to it;)

Um, ok, i'm a practical type of guy who if going camping writes a list before i go..... so in the same theme i will write a list about me.

*Age: 30 in Nov this year, yikes!!!!
*Appearance: Almost black hair, too much of it, and if i cut it short again i'm in strife with my partner in crime who would be mortified.
*Look a like: Bernard Fanning from the band Powder Finger
*Marital status: Need to get married, should have done it before Melly went back to study, had no money, but hey there's no rule book on these this thing they call love, i'll get to it soon!
*Work life: Got scouted by an architectural firm in my second yr of Uni back in 2003, worked there ever since. My role started off as an illustrator, then progressed into building design, graphic design, photography, web page design, marketing, project management, all sorts really. My partner and i had to move to Melbourne 3 years ago to further her studies, and now we have moved to Canberra because she landed that after uni elusive job. All awhile i have been working from home and fly back to Adelaide when required by work. The wonders of technology these days:)
*Education: Studied Illustration design for 3 years where i met Melly who was studying Graphic Design, but now she is an Art Conservator, kinda like an archaeologist, only they bring them in so that she can preserve artefacts and artworks. I find it fascinating.
*Special interests: Photography - self taught, have done lots of commissions, shoot for my place of work, i sell my fine art photography from time to time but am pursuing more income in this are in the next few years. Painting and drawing - always taken this for granted, was a little burnt out after uni but am keen to get back into it. Sports - bloody mad about it, esp footy (bombers) and cricket - had to leave my team behind in Moonee Valley:( Not sure if i'll pick it up again with possibility of more storms during summer here, maybe i'll join an indoor cricket team. Been riding my bike with Melly to work everyday, then back again before i have to start work, that's 23 kms!!! I'm feeling great:)
*Weather interests: Started storm chasing when i got my P's when i was 16 in a 2 door Torana, haven't looked back since. Terrible at physics, so i've always learnt from reading and from others, and most importantly from observing. Like to think that a creative side can be brought to the weather community. Been a member of ASWA for about 8 years, currently Vice President, but recently started role as ACT rep and may focus on this role as we rebuild NSW. Great times ahead.
*Craziest things i have done: Jumped out of a plane, went down a black run on my 3rd day of skiing, saved my camera from a rogue wave but not myself..... probably too many more risk taking that will one day catch up to me.
*Things i want to do before i die: Chase in USA - been given the word that i need to marry first, see europe, master skiing, learn to play guitar, and master scones.
*Want: a dog, preferably one that will fetch a ball and jump into surf, ids mk 4 when it comes out, and yes to get married!!!!!

Ok, enough from me.
Planning on living a long time. There's so much to do in such a short space of a life!

Actually, i forgot to mention when i was 15, i abused the daylights out of Ward Rooney one day. I sent him a letter giving him an awful pasting, because in class before lunch when i was writing up my forecast to stick on the undercroft window, i listened to him on my walkman in class say it would be fine, and we had showers and thunderstorms..as i had forecast.

So he writes back, defending himself by saying he had just come on duty. Back then, 3 8 hour shifts.(1989). So given i used some words i shouldnt have, and he said he was shocked, suprised and confused by the attack, i wrote back apologising saying in fairness it is a tough job, but perhaps take my advice and try looking out the window.

So we kept in regular touch and then i asked to go into the BOM and meet him, which he said was ok, so i went in twice, and kept in regular contact right up until he left last year. He is a ripping bloke, and every time i spoke to him on the phone or in person i cringed at the thought of the tirade i sent him..and i will confess i used to break them by ringing him on the direct line number whenever there was a storm around, usually at 4 am when i knew he could chat.

So thats one of lifes funny stories. And i still have the letters to this day, despite receiving them in 1989.

LOL, yep, that's me. Subtle as a bloody sledgehammer :roffl: Thanks Greg ;)

AV, love the Ward Rooney story, I lol'd at you giving him a reaming :o

Paul, trust me, I know very little as well, I can assure you you're not the only fledgling around here. But that's what's great about being here, everyone has something to contribute, no matter how small or inconsequential it might be. We all share the same passion, and that's what matters :) There's plenty of other discussions you can get stuck into (or start up yourself :)) and I've found at times that by weighing in to a discussion even with barely any knowledge, it's helped me to research, investigate and learn much more than what I ever would have if I'd just sat and read and not said a thing :flower:
