A couple of troughs moving through on Wednesday and Thursday followed by an intense low for the weekend. Classic deep and cold system, so snow on the alps, gales and a storm surge on the coast, and potential for heavy falls in the usual favoured spots.

Showers and storms developing later on Wednesday, similar on Thursday and then rain, showers and storms through the weekend. Expecting falls to top 100mm in the northeast, and also potential the South Gippsland Hills and Otways. Will be patchy on the plains west of Melbourne and the northwest of Vic.

Thanks for starting this one HB - looks like one of the more significant cold outbreaks of recent months, and some good rain too, although our area may be a bit too far south and west for the best of it. Hoping for another wiggle south and west!

Anyway, a welcome distraction and we must remember that weather remains a very important factor in our lives; directly for those of us in rural areas, and still highly significant for things like food prices and water supply in urban areas. (Not to mention all the day-to-day life influences.)

Edit: Latest EC has Macedonian getting a dusting of snow from this :).

A good opportunity for the new radar at Wimmera to get a workout too:

Progs look pretty similar this morning. Showers and storms developing today in NSW and SA spreading into northern Victoria late. Heavy falls by the morning through eastern areas. The boundary for the heavier falls seems to be a line from about Melbourne to Bendigo. Northeast looks like it will do very well.

EC just upped our totals big time, especially tonight and tomorrow - more than doubled our forecast for this period to 25mm!

Enjoying the historic moment as rain first appears on the 128km Rainbow Radar :).

Don't we now get statewide coverage with the 512km Melbourne Radar?

It looks like its alreday in there (Rainbow radar in WZ) which is GREAT much of western Vic covered in light rain atm :D :D :D :D
Cant select the radar site yet but data already in the VIc radar image and loop :D so its working

Yeah you can in Bom radar but i just much prefer WZ clours and abilty to do up to 18 hour loops with Lightning and Obs overlay.

What a great 4 days ahead, many of us will get good rain
50 to 100mm in the NE
30-50mm for much of E Vic east of a line Echuca to Melb same for East burbs and west and south gippy
10-30mm for the SW and another 5 to 10mm for the W, NW but today the best for them

20mm for Mildura and much of the Mallee should get 15 to 25mm great even all moving south :D :D :D

Wet night for much central and eastern Vic tonight
Bring on the heat and stroms

Looking like a good autumn break for central and eastern areas. 15-50mm widespread, then a handy follow- up on Saturday with the second part. Should be the odd rumble tomorrow with locally heavier falls.

Of course, for some the autumn break came back on about January 10. Has been one weird 12 months weather wise :? Hopefully this wet pattern sticks for a while.

Nice to see areas of rain appearing on the radar, though still a fair way off. Feels like it has been ages, and great to see a bit of an upgrade on the models. I wonder though if we’ll get a bit rain shadowed here, but time will tell. It has been a great year so far for rain, as well as cooler temps. March came in as the second month in a row here with below average temps, about 2 degrees below for the maximum and just slightly under for the minimum.

Very welcome 27mm in the gauge. Nice start to April. Mostly moderate here with the odd heavier burst.

Remarkable consistency in falls. Our local gauges are showing 25 to 30mm with not much variation. The local BoM AWS looks a bit low (it sits on a fairly steep north facing slope and can read a bit low when there is gusty northerly winds (and reads high when there are gusty swly winds).

Rain clearing east currently, but showers will redevelop this arvo with unstable conditions. Could be the odd rumble.

Part B then comes through late tomorrow with a very strong front. Pressures drop to near 995hPa on the coast with gales, a band of rain, a storm surge on the coast and then a very wintery weekend. Nice way to start the month :D

22mm in the gauge. A great start to April.

Probably another 10mm or so likely in coming days.

Amazed to see average 35mm in the 2 manual gauges, I remember seeing they were empty a couple of days ago so checked the neighbour's, which I know I emptied yesterday when he asked me to after checking on his wellbeing, it had 33mm. Melbourne Water's about 2kms away has had 27.8mm so we must have copped a localized heavy fall.

I didn't hear any rain last night while asleep, so i was surprised to see 24mm in the gauge this morning.
