Wow, it doesn't take much to get us SandGropers excited about the weather :P
Not a strong front but a decent one. Most rain since August and a F0 or low F1 Tornado. A few of reckon it was more likely a microburst but there was some interesting shots about of sheet metal that may suggest a F0/F1 Tornado. There was one I saw somewhere of a bit of roofing that had lodged in a tree. Split clean up the centre till half way where it stopped, leaving the roofing up in that tree. So the wind must have moved away pretty quick.

We have also had one of our chasers make the paper and I think it was the whinge/news website, "WA Today" as well. StormyGirl is getting good.

Some pics here taken by LightningWog.

Oh and there was one amazing total recorded. James Crossing in the South West has had 136mm to 9am! :shock: :shock: http://www.bom.gov.au/wa/flood/southwest.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and

There was a cow on the Kwinana Freeway. That became a trending topic on Perth Twitter :)

and

Roads were all flooded, Riverside drive became a boat ramp.

and

The ABC News and Weather reported the Tornado properly. It was referred to as a small tornado. Getting better. Very professional compared with the commercial stations :) They used the dirty word! :( I guess weak Tornado would be better?

Lots of excitement, Fu! Love the shots, you do have some talented photographers over there :) I think the roof metal stuck in a tree photo you mentioned was on the Perth now website? I saw it yesterday in one of the links on WAWG. Yes, I noticed ABC were referring to a "small" tornado last night too which was great, but I'm with you, "weak" would be even better :)

Very happy, apart from the damage, to see my predictions work out that i made in February.

And i will repeat, tornadoes will be widespread and larger than usual through the winter and Spring for WA, and then SA, Vic, NSW and QLD.

Especially in Spring, expect Vic and SA to be pummelled within an inch of our lives. Auckland was a good warning as to what to expect.

Perth is a victim of the equlibrium being restored, and will continue to be pulverised for the next 6 months.

Well, we are getting there with the media hopefully.
Whilst the public may call it a mini tornado, the media need to understand them a little better when reporting them. Then the public will gradually become more aware of tornado's and what they are. Then we start seeing more use of Fujita scale in Australia. Then we have greater awareness that, yes Australia gets Tornado's.

We seem to deny ourselves (as a population) that they happen here by calling them "mini" tors. As if to say, "..we don't have those in Australia so it was a mini Tornado"

I just posted the extended loop for the day here.
http://www.waweathergroup.com/forum/vie ... 502#p38502" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

At around 23.20UTC you can see the rotation start near Rotto, then increase shortly before reaching Kwinana area. The hook signature shape is right over the area damaged.

Is there anyway of extrapolating Tornado strength from a radar echo? I guess it would require Doppler so we won't get that for WA in the next 30 years. Even though so many tornados occur between Bunnas and Perth.

Some viscious fronts with decent rainfalls near the coast are due to sweep through southwest WA early this week as the longwave troughing amplifies over this region as expected. Forecast soundings from last night's 12z run of GFS in the Perth area overnight on Sunday were going for 15kt northerlies near the surface backing and increasing to 60kt northwesterlies by 850hpa. As always with these kinds of high shear setups, the risk of a small tornado can't be ruled out... although modest instability might be a limiting factor.

They didn't mention the 'm' word on Perth 7news. BTW some good falls around the wheatbelt, only had 1mm here but its the farmers who really need it - and no doubt I'll get the heaviest rain out of Thursday's front. :)

My first post here too, hi everyone. :D

Hey Lily. :) You're on WA weathergroup as well, aren't you.

Saw some nice coldies around today. No rain today though. Models are indicating are series of cut-off lows in the next fortnight then a strong cold front on the 15th. BTW has anyone seen the synoptic? That low down south is at 945 hPa! Haven't seen that for a while . . .

Perth's heaviest rain in a year
Josh Fisher, Thursday June 2, 2011 - 11:02 EST
Perth was drenched with more than 30mm of rain during the past 24 hours, a hopeful start to winter after autumn's below average rainfall.

This recent wet weather was delivered by a strong cold front that targeted the Lower West district with the largest totals, ranging from 30 to 50mm.

The city gained a total of 30.2mm, which is the heaviest 24 hour rainfall since July of 2010. This is welcome relieve after receiving only 104.4mm during autumn, 77mm below the long-term average.

Bickley also had their heaviest rain since last July, picking up nearly 40mm in 24 hours. The largest total in the region was recorded at Mount William, which received 54mm.

South to southwest winds will continue to drive isolated showers over the region this morning, but conditions will clear during the afternoon as a ridge of high pressure builds in.

An interesting observation tonight June 7th 6.50pm
On the national loop , you can see a low deepening on the coast/land.. near southern WA coast near the SA border. Developing clockwise rotation of Upper cloud

A reasonable size too!!

That same upper low noted on the previous post ,was pushed inland by the expansion of the cold pool of air from the south, pushing into the mainland/interior.today June 8th 2011
Last night that upper low was spinning on the top of the high quite close to the WA southern coastline. Tonight it is not as intense but is further north into the western interior. On the trough line as observed on the synoptic chart
A substantial blob of thunderstorm activity in the area atm.
Is this the same trough and mid-level low that ken was eluding to, that will make it all the way across the interior, to the eastern coastline before an ECL in 10 days to come?

Yeh looks like it will make its way across the state. WA BoM are calling it an upper level cold pool. It was impressive watching it form off the south west of WA on Friday night and slowly drifting E/NE and then, as you say, it was pushed north into the Interior. Still quite a lot of thunderstorm activity on the trough atm but contracting into the NT now.
