They're still in hibernation, I think,- though Raindammit puts up a few posts.

After a slow start to the Month / Year, I have had 396mm so far. Most of that fell in the 48 hour period on the weekend just gone, with 196mm on Friday night / early Saturday morning.

Grass is boggy, the bin stinks and the pool is overflowing into the garden beds... ah wet season... I missed you!

One thing of note is that we have had far more lightning and thunder than in recent years - bring it on, I love it!

Nice blob just skirting the coast of Cairns, hoping it backbuilds from the north!

From the BoM's MJO weekly note:
Tropical low to generate widespread rain across northeast Australia this week

Tropical low to generate widespread rain across northeast Australia this week
A tropical low currently near the southern coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria is expected to be the focus of locally heavy rain for the next few days. This comes after a week of significant rainfall across much of northern Australia, associated with a burst of moist westerly winds across the region. As a result, some locations, particularly across inland northern Queensland, are expected to experience flooding.

The tropical low is expected to remain over land and track westwards through the Northern Territory in the next day or two. Later this week, the low is expected to be captured by a mid-latitude trough, and likely bring tropical moisture and heavy rainfall to southeastern Australia.

Birdie wrote: Sat Jan 25, 2020 11:44 am Nice to read chat about proper FNQ locations- Found my way over here thanks to Scott 🙂
We seem to be in under a dome abit here at Newell, nothing quite making it all the way to the coast. Only about 15mm last night.
Ho hum.
Hi Birdie..looks like those Daintree types have been been stealing all your rain unfortunately...

Yeah and a word of warning , just be careful of that marakai fella....

Don't be deceived by his charm and quick wit...

You do really need to keep an eye out for those backwoods folk...if you have seen the "Wrong Turn" movie franchise then you will know what I mean... ;) :D
Naw .. that's way too Modern Scott, we been here a long while. More like Deliverance LOL

I know it's OT really but any one else been keeping an eye on this Corona virus thingy? Could have a huge impact on the FNQ economy over coming months let alone other effects.

Which rain gauge did you leave out before you set off to the south,- the Nylex, or the little toy gauge ??

I've been watching that Flatrock Alert, (about 40 km to your east),- and there has been some reasonable falls there.
Surely you've scored enough for everything to be green & happy.

Yes hickory, everything will be green, and totally overwhelming, when I get back.

Day after I left there was 60mm in a morning. Apparently quite a bit since.

Crazy rain at the moment.

8 mm at 22:00 hrs, and just checked the nylex, and I'm up to 147 mm.
Front and back yard are flooded up to my ankles. Love to see it all the same.

Great rain in Kans this morning , pity we are missing it with only 24mm here.

Been loving the wet stuff, tanks are full again..lol
But would love a good flood day .

So happy to see rain has made it inland and even got some rivers running . Hopefully even the Darling will get a flow.

Cheers

I reckon that the people that live along Freshwater Creek are lucky that Copperlode was sitting at 70% full before this.

And more fun and games.

Aircraft conducting missed approaches,- can't get visual at company minima.

Hainan Airlines HU745 holding out to sea, and may go to Brissie as an alternate.
Jetstar JQ 977 going around in circles too. Now lightning & thunder overhead.

Four lightning strikes just knocked out the VOR / DME, - - Apron at the airport closed.
HU745 just diverted to Brissie as their alternate. Running low on kero.
