Said it before mate, thanks for keeping us up to date with these stats - I'm heading 'home' to Yorkshire at Christmas / New Year, so will be keeping a close eye on winter

Cheers

Met Office data suggests mild winter but don't forget last year

Its “Barbecue Summer” was a washout while its “mild winter” was the coldest for 31 years, so you might be forgiven for taking the Met Office’s latest prediction with a pinch of salt.

But the official forecasters have said that this winter could be unusually mild and dry, with temperatures at least 2C more than last year’s big freeze in which snow and ice caused travel chaos across much of Britain.

Although the Met Office no longer issues long-term forecasts, their latest data suggest a high probability of a warmer winter for London, the East of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The South West, Wales and most of the North of England are less likely to enjoy such relatively pleasant temperatures but still have a 40 to 60 per cemt chance of being mild.

The statistics were generated by the Met Office’s new £33million supercomputer built by IBM.

Forecasters used it to analyse how likely temperatures and rainfall were to be above normal for winter but not how far above.

The average temperature for winter from 1971 to 2000 is 3.7C (39F). However, last year was 1.5C (35F), meaning anything above the 30-year normal this winter would be a marked improvement with far less chance of snow and ice.

As well as the milder winter, the computer concluded that almost all of Britain had a 40 to 60% of being drier than normal, with only the south coast more likely to see normal amounts of rain.

However, the Met Office warned that the figure were only part of the data used to build predictions for December, January and February’s weather but do not include such influential factors as the El Nino-La Nina high-low pressure system in the Pacific Ocean and the North Atlantic Oscillation, which partly governs the winds and storms which arrive in Britain from the west.

Last year, the Government’s forecasters were repeatedly criticised for predicting, first, a “barbecue summer” which led to a notably damp July and August, then a mild winter which turned out to be the coldest since the 1970s with temperatures down to -22.3C (-8.1F) in Altnaharra, Scotland.

The Met Office subsequently ditched its long-term forecasts but said it was unrelated to the bad publicity, saying the real reason was increased public demand for month by month predictions.

Yesterday, other forecasters suggested the Met Office might, yet again, not be entirely accurate.

Jonathan Powell, senior forecaster for the independent firm Positive Weather Solutions, said the lack of rainfall was in line with his predictions but not the temperatures and added that he expected snow to be a problem.

“It baffles me how the Met Office can predict a milder-than-average winter when all the indicators show this winter will have parallels to the last one,” he said.

“The Met Office is standing alone here, as ourselves and other independent forecasters are all predicting a colder-than-average winter.”

Technimatch, which produces analysis for its website The Weather Outlook, predicted a colder winter than average with heavy snow; while Netweather, which supplies forecasts to firms, said it expected a cold and very dry December.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “This is not an official forecast, it’s data that would form part of a longer term prediction.

“If you look at the whole picture across north west Europe, there’s a higher chance of a cold winter than a warm one.”
