southern hemisphere

Sensational imagery of a mid latitude cyclone smack bang in the middle of the ocean. Probably larger than cyclone YASI!

Look how far it reaches to the north, almost 15° S!! That's almost the same latitude as Cairns!

I found the image last night on my daily observation of theworld satellite pic at
(select play to animate)

Discussed the image with Big Pete on South west WA weather on weatherzone forum and he captured this much better image
using

You can follow the WA thread atm

Those midlatitude storms can pack a real punch and wind speeds can often be stronger than low-end tropical cyclones. Their cold fronts tend to be particularly vigorous over South America in winter where they're also known as "friagems" and have occasionally been known to reach equatorial latitudes albeit with reduced intensity. Similar deal with the cold fronts off eastern Asia where the extremely cold air from Siberia (the highs there can be massive and reach 1050 to 1060hpa) can make them reach the Philipines.

One intense low that passed Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean in late April, caused the baromteric pressure to drop 34hPa in about 15 hours. This was followed by a pressure increase from 951hpa to 1008hpa in 24hrs as the low moved rapidly away and was replaced by higher pressures.

Hey! I was just cruising around trying to learn about the clouds and global climate and came across this.
I thought it was a 'cool' picture. Pun pun! LOL :P

"It is also interesting to note that, although globally clouds have a cooling effect, their thermal effect on the surface is different during the day and at night. In general, clouds tend to have a cooling effect during the day and a warming effect at night, and therefore lead to a decrease in oscillation between daily maximum and nightly minimum temperatures. Clouds’ influence on daily thermal oscillation was corroborated on the three days following the destruction of the Twin Towers, during which planes were prohibited from flying over the United States. During those days, the diurnal temperature oscillation increased by more than 1° C. The most probable reason for this is the absence of the contrails (or vapour trails) left by planes as their hot exhaust gases facilitate condensation (Travis, 2002).

What an amazing 'sat pic' .. of airplane contrails!! Man made clouds!!

Now this is a nice top down picture from a plane.
Your next mission RIVERGIRL.. Cyclone photography from planes this 2011/12 cyclone season 8-) whoa!

This amazing photo of Tropical Storm Lee was captured by AccuWeather.com's own Valerie Smock while on a hurricane hunter mission late last week. Lee was just offshore of Louisiana when this picture was snapped.

This was before Lee unleashed torrents of rain from Louisiana to New York, causing disastrous flooding.

Valerie had the opportunity to join the hurricane hunters on the flight through Lee because of her position as a Public Affairs Specialist in the Air Force Reserve,

Great find there crikey.
I have a lot of pics I've had saved on my computer for some years of the insides of eyes of hurricanes taken from hurricane hunter aircraft but there are also many awesome ones available online. Some of the best ones are from Hurricane Katrina which devastaed New Orleans. Here's a few:

http://images.google.com/search?q=%22hu ... 52&bih=667

..and another one from inside Hurricane Katrina's eye clearly showing the eyewall composed of banks of cumulonimbus clouds up to 50,000ft:

Just fabulous Ken.. Never seen pics of cyclone eye walls before. :P
Truly amazing they can fly directly overhead above the turbulence with no harm. Noticed the tip of the wing of the plane in that shot.
I am sure there would be risks in photographing above cyclones.

Expedition 3 Commander Frank Culbertson was aboard the International Space Station at the time of the attacks, and the only American on the crew. As soon as he learned of the attacks, he began documenting the event in photographs because the station was flying over the New York City area. He captured incredible images in the minutes and hours following the event. From his unique vantage point in space, he recorded his thoughts of the world changing beneath him.

That's actually a probe on the nose of the aircraft rather than a wingtip.

JAN 17th 2012. Pacific ocean.
Took a snap of this upper low in the pacific ocean . It is centred around the solomon islands or thereabout
Just massive
Found the position interesting as it sits on top of the sub tropical jetstream and is residing in the monsoon trough region from what l can deduce from the 200mb windstream maps
Down under beneath the structured top layer( 200mb ) the low structure is weaker and less intense, and at surface level , not evident.
I couldn't find any sign of a surface low indicating the very large rising air mass is occurring from the mid levels at around 500mb
Also of note is the lack of the dynamic wind patterns that are often seen to spin lows up in the more southern latitudes.
I was wondering if this low is a massive heat low? ( induced by convection in the equatorial trough, rather than wind patterns?)

I am not sure of how the large upper low came to be?
What is amazing to contemplate is that 200mb is the upper air.
and this air mass is just exactly that , the top layer of the tropopause. Yet at 200mb, this parcel is rising ..
THe static image really doesn't convey how good this looks
The animated loop looks sensational!! amazing satellite picture 8-) :P 8-)
