James wrote: Tue Feb 18, 2020 7:26 pm Well..i got more than i bargained for!

nasty bolt landed somewhere just across near boronia road, or the bowling green estate. I am pretty sure it was close as i actually saw the tentacles touch down and sparks falling from the powerline with instantaneous thunder.

I also saw the security lights of the house over from me come on and off, and then flicker as if they were damaged!

no damage here thankfully, i had disconnected everything as i could see we were in the firing line.

It all moved on pretty quickly after that, thankfully no hail !!

whats the conditions like this evening, will storms still fire after dark or are they relying on the heating?
Ha, lucky no damage. Robyn’s had a few nearby hits and from memory lost appliances a couple of times. She on the hill just above you,

It’s funny that we live on the biggest hill for about 10km with numerous nearby telecommunication towers but our hill rarely gets hit. We had one tree struck about four years ago, but apparently they revere the charge on the towers so they appear as holes when it comes to lightning to protect the sensitive electronics.

Stunning Wolfcat and Wilco! That shelf was an absolute pleasure to watch from Elwood beach. Its NW approach suiting the viewing position. So many nice photo opps.
It was a beauty when it arrived dumping about 5-10mm in about 15mins with good sized hail. So photogenic too.

New more moderate band moving in now.

Thanks Blackie, I was just up the road from you at North Road Boat Ramp, timed my run to the car where I only got a few drops on me as I chucked my gear in the car before the heavens opened up.

Great pics! I'm trying to feel satisfied with our 10.5 mm today (about what I expected and very handy) but it's not been easy watching the storms dodging us and hearing these reports from just a bit south and east!

About 10mm here. On the lower side of totals around central parts, which I sort of expected given the setup but keeps things ticking over. MTD now 65mm and YTD 211mm. Had amazing close range lightning today with huge thunder claps. Lost power 3 times. First time in the early morning for about an hour, then for about half an hour later in the morning and for another hour around lunchtime. The network was clearly under attack!

Currently a lovely 14c. Wind has really picked up in the last hour from the west-southwest.

No exciting storms in Northern Tassie but as you can see from the NW Tasmania radar good soaking rain at last as the LOW stalls a bit in Bass Strait.

The developing low is starting to spin up nicely. Getting cyclonically rotating bands of heavy showers here now. The circulation centre appears to be just northeast of King Island and the surface low is developing near the Gippsland coast. Expect a burst of heavy wrap around showers tomorrow morning. EC has around 10-20mm here tomorrow, and wouldn’t be surprised if there are local falls in the 20-40mm range.

Btw love the photos. Great captures.

Up to 29mm since 9am today and little bit more tonight by the looks of things
The “bay effect” may come to play hopefully with this cold air

54mm in the gauge :D Hope that band to our south moves up before 9am and pushes us to something even more exciting ;) been a wild, wet, foggy and windy night. Classic mid summer low pressure system (I find we don’t get these very often, but when we do they are crackers like this one).

City’s 34mm and counting is the highest since February 2011. That fall was in the 82.4mm so some ways to go to better it ;)

Jump the gun at bit earlier it seems as showers have started pushing through here.

A bit on the chilly side this morning, not the type of conditions one wants when your sick as dog. :(
