Blustery cold fronts: 18-20 July

A blustery couple of fronts ahead with the main front on Sunday and follow up around Monday. Not a lot of moisture with the system, and quite westerly so will tend to mainly focus on the immediate coast and higher ranges. Perhaps locally 10-20mm, though for many it will be more like 2-5mm. Bit of snow in the alps, though system isn’t very cold so mainly about 1400m.

Still looking for a proper winter front. Current Vic snow cams are looking pretty grim (though Melbournians can’t travel anyway).

5.7 degrees here at 12.20pm with a persistent fog still. I can't even see the sun which suggests it is quite thick, or there is cloud above it.

By the way, when was a new station opened at Frankston? Because it's not really in Frankston haha. It's in Ballam Park which is sort of Karingal.

That station currently showing 6.5 degrees.

First day above 10 degrees in Woodend since the 10th today. As opposed to foggy picture in Melbourne was sunny by 945 here and a high of 11.3c. Back to 7 now though

Bit of a wild and wooly one up here with a max of just 7.6C under overcast skies. Wind chill really made it feel cold. Thankfully spent the day chopping up a dead tree and a fallen branch so nice hot work

Progs looking ok for coastal and the ranges, but not much elsewhere. Thinking perhaps 10mm here from noon Sunday to about Tuesday evening, but city and northwest will be lucky to get more than a mm or two. Bit of snow in the alps, perhaps 5-10cm.

It has certainly been a dry and boring winter here, I do miss those epic winter downpours in the Perth hills.

Satellite looks ok with the front moving into central mid arvo. Bit moisture starved, but coming at the best time of the day. Chance for a rumble. Not a lot of rain, but perhaps locally 5-10mm. Follow up fronts on Monday and Tuesday arvo.

Same here. Would expect lots of small hail with that system. Few gauges showing near 10mm under it. Classic mid winter storm. Seen a couple of bands like that before drop 5cm or more of hail here, but alas that one slipped south

Now waiting on the front which is just moving up on the CBD.

Morning sunshine, afternoon front with storms not bad for winter.
Saw a few flashes one big rumble, real strong winds with the front nice burst heavy rain

Man this winter has been dry north of the ranges many running well below though NSW has been tracking better on and west of ranges SA also dry too

Boring cool to cold week 14c partly cloudly shower here and there for the next week
Bring on big rain event or huge low to our west or big stand up cold front like old days.
Looks like highs move north as do fronts toward end of July into August our winter might be coming yet

Me though getting over Cold (even though its warmer than normal) is it Oct yet lol.

That front provided three minutes of excitement. Squalls, rumbles and hail. 2mm in the gauge. Month is turning into a real dud, weather wise with no proper cold weather or cold air convection to speak of. On track for a dry one now unless late this week surprises.

Some showers this week, though mainly coastal. Troughs next weekend, but look like they will probably favour NSW.

2mm yesterday afternoon. Now cold and sunny.

EC has 10mm next weekend. GFS isn't interested. MJO and IOD have not cooperated this month. I suspect that will change in Mid-August.

1.2mm (nearest AWS) from yesterday's short sharp front - the showers and gusts of wind were very short-lived. Couple of trees down in Donvale and a broken window in Bulleen, otherwise quiet.

Looked like it was mostly dry overnight and only 0.2mm so far today with a brief shower not long ago.

Really goes to show that you need in SE Australia (winter/spring) IOD = negative, which we have and SAM = negative, which we don't have, it's neutral. LA Nina can help with adding in surface pacific moisture but the first two are more important.

The jet and LWT in particular have not been in our favour so far. Southern systems just not playing ball, which is a waste of a warm Indian ocean.

Decent falls south of here and looks like about 20mm at our place in Walkerville, the other side of the shutdown

Another trough headed to NSW for the weekend. The beaches up there could be a big trouble if the latest EC verifies.

Hi everyone from Hobart. Well the last 24 hours finally gave some interesting weather. Yesterday afternoon ending up nearly 16 c then from around 5pm the change came through. Producing cold overnight showers. Results this morning snowing down to 700metres on Mt Wellington. A pretty dry day today but around 2.00p.m. heavy gusting winds hit us. Got up to 60km hour. Still a little gusting still going on tonight but dropping off. So thankful for the break in the previous non exciting week's proceeding this front. Waiting for the next one.
