Becoming cold and showery, with snow on the alps: August 17-25

Post by hillybilly »

Nice winter spell coming up with a series of fronts. First one for Thursday, second around Friday, sneaky warm front for Saturday, and another cold front for Sunday. Will be more impressive in southern areas.

Totals should be ok in coastal and west facing areas. Might save the ski season for a few weeks. Fingers crossed this one delivers.

System looks solid for VIC. There’s quite a good upper trough which should thicken up widespread showers, perhaps tending towards rain later today into tomorrow. Very wet for western Tasmania. Not so for eastern areas. Frustrating system in some ways as it almost cuts off into a low, but not quite. This winter has had barely any east coast lows which is really dragging down the totals for east coastal Vic, NSW and eastern Tas.

Might be in with a chance of a sub-10c maximum today. No rain yet, but it's not far away.

Solid falls for much of VIC, with the Wimmera doing particularly well. Big falls for western Tas and the hills in northern Tas. Miss for southeast TAS ☹️

Band spreading into the alps now and will bring some much needed snow. Not a particularly cold system, but still chilly enough for snow across all the resorts.

Few showers to come over the weekend.

Just a touch over 4mm here too. Probably won’t be much more, maybe the odd shower or two today.

Bust down here in southern TAS 😩Just a trace the last 24 hours.

Now under strong warm air advection so drizzle showers for west facing areas. Snow lines are rising pretty strongly so suspect a wash out in the alps. Northern areas might escape the worst of it, but Lake Mt, Baw Baw and Donna will likely be pretty bare by the end of the coming week.

Progs behind mid week are looking loopy. Might get our first east coast low in nearly two months. Eastern VIC and TAS really need one.

The “cold” outbreaks are really half hearted this year aren’t they.

Back up to 18 degrees again in the city today after yesterday’s “event”…

A welcome 20mm here, we seemed to do a lot better than the local aws to our east in the follow up with thick drizzle all night and throughout most of today.

Just getting enough out of these events over the past few weeks to keep things wet, but after a solid June, we’re still well down on our typical winter rainfall here. The wind in July noticeably dried everything out.

Early heat in September won’t bode well for the bushfire season.

Another pretty mild and gentle week coming up for Melbourne.

Winter just dribbling away.

Could be quite wet here tomorrow night. GFS 00z reckons 20+mm. Other forecast models a more modest 10-15mm.

17C on both Saturday and Sunday. After our warmest July on record, feels like we are determined to have a run at the warmest August. Still waiting to get a properly cold day all year, with nothing below 10C so far.

Another week of mostly mild weather, more typically of later September of October. New thread time for the front on Tuesday into Wednesday.

Lots of short, very heavy downpours this evening - unexpected. 10mm over the last few hours and more to come.
