SOUTHERN LIGHTS: A solar wind stream is buffeting Earth's magnetic field, sparking Southern Lights around the Antarctic Circle. Ian Stewart sends this picture from a jetty near Hobart, Tasmania:
"Not long after sunset a friend rang to ask whether a faint arc of light crossing over the southern sky was an aurora. It was!" says Stewart. "This is the first time in the new solar cycle that I have managed to photograph the Aurora Australis. Previous events either have not been strong enough to view at 43o South, or have occurred during our daytime. Perhaps this is the beginning of a good aurora season for the southern hemisphere."

Wow, lovely pic on there Shel. Going to be working in Hobart for a week in about 3 weeks time, do you reckon there will still be some activity? Will have to take the camera with!

Wow, thanks Shell, just sent to my sister in Huonville. That's amazing. Good luck Chris if it's happening while you're there.

Shell I'd like to go to Hobart if I had a few days notice to photograph this. Yes you would need a tripod as looking at the EXIF data the pic is shot on 1/30 sec. Can you give me the details of the Southern Aurora yahoo group. Also should I pay for the alerts on http://www.spaceweather.com

Have always wanted to photograph the lights. When I was in Antarctica earlier this year it was too early for them. Thanks :)
