Observations for yesterday, Thursday January 12th 2012
The day was pretty much fine and mild. In the extreme south there was still some cold winds coming from the north. Clouds developed over the northern Sicilian mountains, however no rain was observed.
Most of the country was clear and sunny, except for parts of the coasts of Liguria, parts of southern Piedmont, parts of southern Lombardy, parts of western Emilia, and parts of northern Tuscany. These clouds only brought some drizzle to the Genoa area.

Another quiet day over the country, however more clouds over the western side. In fact it will be mostly cloudy over eastern Liguria, the Tyrhennian regions and western Sardinia, with some showers over northern Tuscany, most of the Tytthenian coast and north west Sardinia. There may be some clouds also over Alto-Adige and in the afternoon in Marche. Fine and sunny weather over the rest of the country with some morning fog in the north. Temperatures will increase in the south. Moderate westerly winds over the Ionian sea.
By evening, another area of disturbance will slide down from the Balkans and and begin to effect the middle and southern Adriatic coasts. This will bring more rain to the coasts of the southern regions and snow in the southern Apennines. The weather will again remain sunny in the north. By Sunday the temperatures will start to lower.

Cold air over the Balkan peninsula makes it way to Italy today, bringing a significant drop in temperature, with severe frosts in the central north and some precipitation to Calabria and the islands.
Also dense fog this morning in the Valpadana, which could be persistent even through the middle of the day, with mist and gray skies.
Clouds and scattered showers in parts of Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia's southern coast, with snow above about 1000 meters. Fine weather throughout the rest of Italy, however some clouds in the morning along parts of the Adriatic coast and, in the evening, between Liguria and southern Piedmont.
Light to moderate northerly winds over the southern Adriatic and Ionian Seas.
Today in many lowland areas of the North there may be some hoarfrost. This is when there is fog and temperatures below freezing, the water droplets freeze onto trees, meadows and fields.
This cold wave will last most likely until the middle of next week when another high pressure will make its way over the country.

It will be a very cold start to the week and a bit windy because of a cold air mass moving down from the Balkans. Morning frosts will be severe in the central north while there may be some bad weather along the Adriatic coast and over the main islands.
Morning fog in much of the Po Valley, with possible persistant fog in central parts of the valley. Clouds in Veneto and on the Adriatic coast, there maybe possible light snowfalls in the morning at low altitude in Romagna to Abruzzo. Mostly cloudy with scattered showers throughout the day over the islands, with snow in Sicily over 1000 meters. Sunny over the Alps, Liguria and the rest of central south.
Very cold this morning, with maximum temperatures falling further in most regions, moderate easterly winds.

Observations for yesterday, Tuesday January 17th 2012
Fog, covered most of the northern plains today. This was mostly in the form of freezing fog with hoarfrost in most places.
A few clouds developed over the skies of Sardinia, while more thicker clouds affected Apulia. Here there was some light snowfalls at sea level in the morning, especially around Lecce and Bari.
Cloudy also in Sicily, with some rain in the morning in the interior areas. For the rest of the country, fine weather or with little cloud.
1mm of rain fell in Catania
Apulia may see some showers and more cloudier conditions than other parts of the country. Clouds but with no rain will be seen over Calabria and Basilicata, as well as parts of Liguria and Tuscany. The rest of the country will be fine apart from fog in the north, where it will be persistent in parts. Temps will be similar to yesterday or slightly higher, and for the most part will be just below, or just above 10c.
The island of Giglio(where the cruise liner is) will see mostly sunny skies and light winds. This may change tomorrow.

Dense fog also affected the northern plains for most of the day, This caused again more of the hoarfrost seen over the past few days.
There was some clouds over Liguria and Lazio. More cloud, with some little precipitation, effected Apulia and Basilicata, especially in the afternoon, accompanied by moderate winds from the north.

Mostly cloudy skies were observed over most of the north and central regions. The eastern Po Valley saw some more freezing fog again, especially around the Veneto Region. Thick clouds developed over the Alps with some late snow falling. The afternoon saw clouds develop over Western Sardinia and the Tyrrhenian regions.
The south was mostly sunny
I really should try and keep this up for this week, with the predicted cold snap on its way!

Cold air that brought heavy snow to the Northwest, will head into the western Mediterranean and then move towards Sicily and the Ionian Sea, where rainfall is expected to be heavy, even quite stormy. Brighter, however, in the Northeast and central Tyrrhenian regions. Still mostly cloudy over other parts of the country with rain in southern and central Adriatic regions, the far South and Islands, particularly heavy between Sicily and Calabria. Snow level down to about 400-600 meters in the central Apennines, 800-1200 m in the mountains of the South and Islands. By evening, more snow in the Northwest, in the Piedmont plain.
Heavy seas in the Tyrrhenian Sea, as well as the area of Giglio island, where waves will be up to two meters. Also heavy seas in the Ionian Sea and the Sicily Channel.
Temperatures almost everywhere in decline. Much colder in the North and Adriatic regions, accentuated by cold easterly winds. The situation will worsen during the week with the arrival of cold air from Siberia, first for the North and then also to Central Southern regions.

The unstable weather that had effected the north west, moved to the south and effected Sardinia, Sicily and the far south. Here we saw rain and thunderstorms. Snow is falling above 400m in Marche, Eastern Umbria, and Abruzzo with rain at lower altitudes. Brighter weather in Liguria and the north and middle Tyrrhenian regions as well as the North east. It remained overcast in the north west.

An area of cold weather moving down from Northern Europe will reach Italy Tuesday, bringing more unstable weather at first to the centre and north and later to the South, with cold weather and snow at low levels.
Tuesday will be cloudy throughout most of Italy with only a little sun in the far northeast.
Weak snowfalls affect the Northwest and Emilia Romagna also along the coasts of Liguria, however not on the Lombardy plain. Rain in the Center, northern Campania, Ionian coasts of Apulia and Calabria, and the islands. The snow level will drop gradually along the Apennines and by evening will be falling down to 200-500 meters in the Centre and 600-800 m in the South
Temperatures falling Central and Northern parts. Strong Bora winds in the northern Adriatic, Northerly in Liguria and easterly on the Ionian Sea.
The cold air is beginning to move in from Siberia, Italy will feel its effects by Wednesday, but especially in the second part of the week where temperatures will fall all over Italy.

Today the areas most affected by precipitation (in this case snow) were Liguria, Piedmont and the plains Lombardy.
Going north, the snowfall decreased, until it disappeared almost completely at the Alps
Some snow also affected parts of the Trentino, Veneto and Emilia Romagna, where snow was heaviest by night
Deteriorating weather also on Sardinia, which moved this evening to the entire western side of the peninsula, with rainfall and snow at low altitudes.
Of note is the extreme rainfall over Sicily and the south, but here snow only fell in the mountains.

Except for the northern and the far south, the rest of the peninsula, saw quite bad weather.
The snow has whitened almost all of central Italy, including Rome. Snow along the Adriatic coast, over the mountains.
In central Italy, only northern Tuscany didnt see any disturbed weather.
In the north snow fell in Emilia Romagna, while elsewhere the weather improved.
Of note, obviously, was the cold, especially in the north, with values well below -10 degrees!
However in the far south, we saw a line of warm weather move in from Africa, bringing almost spring like weather

The cold wave is reaching its peak and will own the weekend when the minimum temperatures will touch many degrees below zero. This wave is also accompanied by persistent bad weather with snow mainly in Emilia Romagna and central southern regions.
Partly cloudy in the Northwest, more cloudy with snow in other areas of Emilia Romagna, central regions and Sardinia even down to the coast. Snow at low altitudes may develop over southern regions also, however the far south will tend to a partly cloudy afternoon and evening especially along the Ionian coast. Occasional snowflakes possible between Veneto and Friuli.
Further drop in temperatures: icy winds, with temperatures well below -10 degrees in the early hours of the day, and staying below zero in the afternoon in many areas of the north. The icy winds will make the weather feel much colder. These winds will start to be felt in the south as well

Observations for yesterday, Monday 6th February 2012
Yesterday there was white in the north due to snow, and there is white due to clouds in the south. Italy is in a bad spot.
It is bad mainly due to temperatures that are very cold in the north and the snow that has fallen in the central and southern parts of the country as well as the north.
There was snow again yesterday but not as strong, from Emilia Romagna to Abruzzo and again along the coast there. There was snow as well in the north as well as central Sardinia. There were showers on the Ionian coasts and the far south, while the far north and the Tyrrhenian regions there was some sun and clouds.
Strong winds were felt in Liguria, the Venezian regions and the south.

Cold and snow continues today with snowfall today focused on the Adriatic regions and the South From tomorrow to Thursday, the snow will mostly stop, but Italy will remain in the grip of extreme cold, then by Friday with the arrival of a new low pressure system snow will return to many areas of the central south.
So today, clouds with snow almost everywhere on the Eastern Alps, as far as the coast, as well as in Emilia Romagna, Marche, Abruzzo, Molise, northern Puglia and northern Sardinia, scattered rain over the rest of Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria and Sicily with snow down to low levers again inland.
Again very low maximum temperatures, below zero in many places in the north.
