A strong front showing up for the coming long weekend reaching western Vic late on Friday, and pushing through the east on Saturday. Is a cold system for April, with 850Ts dipping to around 0C. Not a lot of moisture ahead of it, so will tend to be more a showery system. Is cold enough for some coldies post frontal, which will favour the usual spots (Yarra Ranges, South Gippsland, Otways).

Would be a classic out of season snow chase system, but that’s not allowed ATM

A surprise 7mm in the gauge this morning. Not cold and rather subtropical outside.

Weekend looks more like the dry polar-modified airmass type of system.

Nice little top up for you - the Bendigo area must be looking great; very happy for the farmers up there.

Unexpected torrential shower here earlier with 3 mm in about 20 mins. Beautiful stratocumulus with some crisp edges surrounding us. Feels more like a spring day.

We got a heavy shower also, though short lived. Just shy of 1mm in the gauge. Nice outside now, though winds are picking up a bit.

Widespread showers developing overnight, though focusing more in the south. Nice upper trough through NSW giving a decent drop for areas just north of the border.

Band of heavy showers here this morning. 8mm in the gauge to add to the mm that fell yesterday. MTD is about 150mm now.

Cold blustery one ahead. Showers look pretty sparse on radar atm, but should persist in the south.

3.2mm here from the showers overnight and this morning. MTD is now 101mm and YTD 422mm.

6.5mm here, 73.5mm mtd... which would normally sound impressive .

And right on que my central gas ducted heating system breaks down. Won't even be able to call someone until Tuesday. Lucky the reverse cycle system is working - in reverse. Some nice heavy showers here after good 10mm overnight. At least the weather is providing something of interest.

Had some cracking showers run up the spine of the Dandenongs this arvo. Real dumpers with a peak rainfall rate of 70mm/hr small hail and temperature dipping briefly to 7C. 6mm more in the gauge. Just added up the monthly total and we are on 160mm That’s about 40mm above average or about 30% above average. Cities running around 30-40% above average, so you can see this month is basically running similar but our average is that much greater

Gonna be a cold night.

Decent fall of snow in the alps. Usually would be up for a snow chase but COVID-19 has put a stop to that

BTW solid storm surge showing up on the bay. 130cm is the level when it starts to top the bike paths and hit the back fences of the million dollar homes in Brighton. Might get there in the next hour

That’s not good.

BTW Tis actually cheaper to heat the house off reverse cycle, particularly if it’s a newer model, and can be free if you have solar panels. We didn’t bother with gas on our new place. We’ve also got a wood fire, which helps drying the washing etc in the middle of winter (having five acreage of trees helps with free wood ).

PS just hit 38.3C in Perth, and new April record This time last year they had a huge cold outbreak with snow on the Stirling Ranges.

Only 2.4mm here so far - on the south face of the divide.

My parents place in Perth's eastern burbs hit 40.4c this afternoon... Incredible for April!!

Perth hit 39.5c today amazing for April so jealous would have been great beach day though cant go to beach so prob good thing

Cold, drizzly and foggy night out here in the Nongs. Decent stream coming up from the bay focussing on the area around Boronia to Mt Evelyn, but wiggling back and forth over the Dandenong. 8mm more in the gauge, to add to the 6mm yesterday. Also scored a couple of heavy hail showers around 5pm last night so mixed it up

Best overnight has been in the middle eastern burbs with a few gauges showing nearly 20mm so far. Nongs have seen 10 to nearly 20mm since 9am with lighter falls further east which is the reverse of what usually happens in swly systems (though this stream has been a bit more southerly than usual). Doesn’t look like clearing that quickly.

Btw those temperatures in Perth are crazy. Hundred year old records aren’t meant to be broken by 2C...

Another 3.5mm puts us on an even 10mm for the event.

Better than expected... again. It's interesting (though perhaps not surprising) that when we slip back into a wetter climate pattern, the models tend to underestimate rainfall. Makes for a pleasant change from the opposite.

Hard to believe those Perth temps are happening in the same country! Bitter here, mostly 6-8C since Friday night, and lots of wind, though that has thankfully backed off now.

0.6mm in the gauge this morning from mizzle and fog. That’s about 22mm for the event.

Been a cold one for early/mid April. Our daytime max on Saturday was just 9.5 and yesterday 8.6C. Gonna have to stack some fire wood (am behind with all the damp weather this year).

Btw just added my annual YTD. Up to 636mm. Appear to be still on record pace, though 1935 turned really wet in April so will fall off pace soon. Suburbs including Moorabbin and Scoresby are also running record wet.
