Becoming hot then a couple of troughs: December 18-21

The hot air that’s been tied up over inland northwest Australia is surging south ahead of a couple of troughs for the weekend. Saturday looks to be the hottest, with an arvo change. The initial trough is mostly dry, but will be accompanied by gusty northerlies followed by a gusty change. A second strong trough and front for Sunday which could well trigger substantial rain and storms across eastern Vic. Tas gets more showers which increase as westerlies become dominant. Could even be a bit of snow by mid week about the peaks.

Unbelievably sad tragedy in Devonport today caused by a freak gust of wind. If you look at the observations from Devonport Airport nearby at 10 am the conditions were benign.

Rain for Sunday, has the models scratching heads, on/off every 12hrs for Gippsland. Hoping for 20mm on Sunday. ....and a storm tomorrow evening.

Update - cold front isn't getting past the Great Divide. Wind is howling at 30kts and very dangerous fire conditions right now.

The Lake Marmal fire near Boort burned 220 Ha and nearly took out a friend's hay and machinery shed. A very close call.

Been busy fencing the horses and swimming (went to Snug Beach in the morning and early arvo and Kingston beach in the evening yesterday)

Hot 31C here yesterday. Was nice out of the wind, but not so nice in the wind. Starting to dry out here, so hoping for a bit the next three days. This system kinda splits so eastern and perhaps central Vic does ok, then the westerly fronts slam Tasmania with heavy falls out west. Western Victoria and eastern Tasmania both struggle.

Nothing much so far today, although our little dog 'thunder detector' says there are storms not too far away.
