WOW 7pm to 12am was unreal last night the weather was prefect hot and humid, no wind, the sky was amazing, the sunset colors unreal, the convection rock solid explosive just nuke updrafts, then storm after storm after storm developing, just to my east as the trough sat right over me so frustrating and lightning in all diretions for ages.

Then outflow exploded a strom right overhead bolts and torreatial rain massive drops for a few mins no wind but moon was out the whole time awesome :D :D Then more storms with lighting almost 360 degrees until midnight bloodly awesome just like Qld made me miss Brissy why cant we have many more days like this :D

LOVE Ely dips and LOVE La Nina :D :D :D :D :D
While its frustrating (i have missed everythig last few months no direct hits and mostly dry) its much better then dry change after dry change and no chance of stroms all summer. More weather is forecast again later next week, keep it coming so many storm chances last few weeks.

Mild few days then hot humid again mid late next week yay

More of yesterday please was awesome back to back Ely dips in Vic some been very lucky other missed everything espically western VIc

Major flood event on the cards for NSW late next week hopefully lots of that comes down here have to wait and see prob not lol
Bring on the heat and stroms

Tell me about it, I’ve resorted to adding a few of the constant whingers (and people constantly looking for excuses to promote climate change denialism) to my “foes” list which blocks their posts from appearing and makes reading this board a much more pleasant experience. I think like many people here I’m way more interested in someone at least taking a stab at some kind of analysis instead of someone who only posts complaints about missing out on storms. No names of course.

Also QldTwister, I 100% agree I’d take a La Nina summer full of near misses over a normal or El Niño summer full of never-ending trains of slow-moving high pressure systems, desert-like conditions and completely cloudless wind changes. How quickly people forget how dire and boring those summers actually are!

I did not get a direct hit last night but saw some wonderful cloud structure and distant lightning. It was great!

Some magic pics there everyone; a couple are calendar quality - thanks for sharing.

We lucked out by a whisker but the light show with towering clouds under a full moon was the best yet.

Good to see a few more rainfall 'holes' filling in for those who missed out a week ago, though I know there are still some who have been robbed. Fingers crossed for some more 'hole filling' towards the end of the week.

Yeah, we've been robbed. Just 2km up the road has had 30mm this week. We've had 9mm.

Anyway, a bit of action in the Pacific Ocean with a Tongan volcano going bang and causing a tsunami today...

We had 3 weak high based storms pass over or near Maffra yest arvo, evening and early this morning. A couple of very loud thunderclaps.

I just poured out 5mm so sitting on 6.5mm for this thread.

Didnt hear about the Tongan volcano till I read the post above!

Time for someone to start a thread for next weeks tropical conditions, now that we have the heads-up from Twister.

It'll be interesting to hear what the VEI (Volcanic Explosive Index) is on this bad boy. Curious to know if it'll have any short-term global cooling effects.

Wonder if this is just the start of more eruptions,

Not quite the thread but this event is huge in Tonga.

Pressure wave came through the east coast cities about 7pm. My weather station jumped 3-4 hPa.

Will need to see the estimates of stratospheric sulphur dioxide but this could be significant for climate. There is some evidence a volcano in this region erupted in 1808 with significant climate impacts https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1808_mystery_eruption

Be nice to cancel out a fair chunk of global warming for a year or two which is the current effect of largish eruptions. Early days so not clear whether this will have an effect.

Just checked my weather station data, and yes my barometric pressure jumped around a bit too.

Explosions are ongoing and a Tsunami Warning has been issued for NSW coast and even East Gippsland:
http://www.bom.gov.au/tsunami/

Early indications are VEI 5 or 6. Pinatubo in 1991 was a 6.

50cm wave on the coast near Eden, and similar Tasmania near Bicheno. About 20cm in Hobart. Incredible.

Must have been astonishing eruption.

Reports of 130cm at Norfolk Island. Upgraded Tsunami warnings for both Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands.

Part of me wonders if the biggest detonation is yet to come....

Incredible eruption. Also recorded the pressure spike - jumped about 2 hPa and then dropped about 3 hPa between around 6:50 to 7:50.

Maybe need a thread for Tonga Hunga Volcano,
Possibly move the related posts ?

Another off topic, sipping coffee checking out the sky to the NW,
Green flash lit up the sky, faint and distant..

Simply a pressure wave/gravity wave from the explosion. The gravity wave survives much longer and will make it multiple times around the planet. Algeria will be interesting in the next hour or two as the wave convergences here at a location directly opposite Tonga.

It’s interesting that the pressure wave actually causes ocean waves, with meteo tsunamis evident in the Caribbean currently. Only 5-10cm, but clear in the data.
