Summer snow drift duration - Snowy Mountains

Post by Gordon »

Anyone else interested in this admittedly obscure topic? I watch the Guthega snow cams and this year is the best I've seen for a long time, with snow still visible today - 14 Feb - on the Mt Kosciusko cam. Here's the 4 Feb image for reference...

And here's today's pic, with a small patch just visible:

I suspect this year's long-lasting drifts might be a function of wind piling exceptionally deep drifts over winter, rather than just snowfall. In any case, snow lasting until mid Feb in Oz is quite something.

I recall hillybilly once noting that a drift on Mt Twynam occasionally lasted all year back in the day. Usually, this drift is the one that's gone the distance in my previous records, but in 2022 the Kossie drift (Coopatamba drift?) seems to have won.
