A hot Christmas to New Year, 2022

Thread for the long warm then hot spell developing as we approach the Christmas then New Year period. There is a big dome of hot air in place not far to our northwest currently and this will get dragged south as a high anchors east of Tasmania/Victoria and a low develops in the Bight.

Expecting two to four 40s in the Mallee with Melbourne seeing around five mid 30s. Might well get close to 40C in the burbs.

Doesn’t look like ending with rain for most, with the low tending to slip south, but always a chance that might change.

Ironical that after the cold start to summer that December could well end up above average for much of VIC

Happy Christmas all. First hot day in the sequence today. Peaking in the low 30s south and mid 30s north of VIC. TAS mostly mid 20s. Near the coast a touch cooler tomorrow but inland the heat creeps up a notch.

Pattern looms pretty stuck in the progs with the odd milder day, but generally dominated by upper ridges.

28.5C in Bushy Park the top for Tasmania today. Perfect beach day down here south of Hobart with a humid max of 26C.

38.2C at Walpeup the peak for Vic. TAS gets a very weak change tonight so a touch cooler but it tends to loiter over southern VIC so a hotter day. Chance for a shower in southern Vic and possible rumble. Not much in it.

Edit, and right on time vic emergency alert comes in for thunderstorms.

Only a few drops in that storm, although Eastern suburbs of Bendigo had a downpour that lasted 10 min. Probably 15mm in it there.

18-35.5C here today, sunny calm, a weak storm tried to brew over Lake Glenmaggie but petered out, will be a hot night in my flat roofed house.

Forgot to hit send last night

Some heavy falls under the cells near the ranges with a few spots showing 20-40mm. Best falls seem to be around Kinglake area which scored a ripper.

Hot day as expected with the peak of 40.4C at Warracknabeal. Just north of 44C at Nullarbor in SA so definitely toastie. 31.4C at Launceston the best for TAS. Down here in Howden had morning drizzle then a glorious sunny arvo. Max of 21C.

Hot most places tomorrow. Will get widely around 40C in Vic. Mostly low 30s or so in Tasmania. Might see the odd thundery about the ranges but generally quite sparse.

Stinker in parts of TAS today. 37.6C at Bushy Park the hottest for at least a couple of years. 29C down here in Howden. Very humid with DP in the high teens as the light northerly runs into a southeast sea breeze.

One nice storm went up west of here but drifted south missing populated areas.

Looks like 40.7.C is the peak for Vic at Dartmoor. 44.2C back at Ceduna. All get pretty toasty for December.

Going to be a hot night before an middle of the day change. It will take a long time to clear out the heat up north, but flush pretty effectively down south. Not much rain on it, maybe the odd shower or rumble.

Air conditioning on since 4pm yesterday.
Down to 26 degrees upstairs at 10pm last night and 22 degrees by 6am. Nice for sleeping!

Currently 12.9c at Ballarat Airport. This time yesterday it was 33.5c
