Dancing all around us but hardly a drop. Very dark echos from the Ballan/ Bacchus Marsh storm. Good chance for greater Melbourne to get a decent storm or two.

Nah, maybe the outer north, but that's it

Few posts to go back and read,…

This was interesting reading I’ve just noticed….

Bendigo ppls's.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding, damaging winds and large hailstones over the next several hours in parts of the Central, Mallee, Northern Country, North Central, South West and Wimmera districts. Locations which may be affected include Bendigo, Maryborough, Castlemaine, Kyneton, Daylesford and Bacchus Marsh.

Almost continuous thunder here for that last 45 minutes or so, with a very dark sky. Some good lightning flashes too.

We're on the edge of what looks like some intense rainfall to our west. Don't think it will do too much here unless there's more development. 2mm so far. The temp has also cooled to 19c.

Storms to the north and now to the east of me since 3pm, Lightning tracker has reported 14 strikes
but only heard one rumble just after 5.30pm to the East.
The other ones were too far away to hear, no rain at all.
Max was a very humid 31.6c at my place in Sebastopol dew point hit 20.1c at 3pm
No idea what the Official Max was today as that Ballarat AWS is still down after 81 hours. ??? :x :x

Just when it seemed everything was going to be north and east of us, finally had a storm build out of nowhere for a direct hit - 14mm in 20 minutes, including marble-sized hail.

Non-stop thunder but no lightning seen, so must have been CC. Good thing, as I was very busy saving the driveway & roof gutters!

Very strange system - storm was preceded by a cool southerly, but now very steamy and still.

Yeah, decent storm just now. Reports of hail 10km South of here. Total rainfall today now at 16mm.

And no power.

seem to be under all the anvil and muck here, friend is still waiting for the rain and storms and is refusing to water the garden tonight as they say its still coming

Once I saw that trough creeping up the bay in the morning I was pretty sure it was over for the metro area. It was just a few hours too early unfortunately.

I don’t blame the BoM for being pretty bullish about storms given the values the sounding was giving, I’m assuming the trough’s weird S-shape over the state didn’t help matters for forecasters (particularly when the northern part of the trough barely seemed to move at all but the southern part of the trough was moving with some speed).

Melbourne has always required everything to come together just right for good storms. When we get these humid air masses (uncommon) we also need good heating (not so rare) and a well-timed forcing mechanism (rare). It seems to me that most “fail” days are due to the timing of the troughs/fronts - a little too early or too late and it all fizzles to nothing. Today Ringwood didn’t even get a shower (although we did get an alright light show late last night). That’s what you get for living in an oceanic, rain-shadowed climate with arid influences I suppose - we don’t have a lot of days with the kind of deep moisture required for storms, so we get relatively few rolls of the dice each year.

Oh well, if we didn’t have all these near misses we wouldn’t enjoy it as much when the atmosphere does decide to cooperate😆
